и тоже крашенки
and also krashenki, which means a dyed easter egg

These three dimensional eggs brought memories from my times spent dying Ukrainian Easter Eggs.  Using a “kystka”, a small tool, to apply wax to an egg and subsequently dying the egg in various colors, similar to a batik process.  Each egg contained certain symbols and meanings just as any work of art.  Such as a rooster to symbolize fertility, and a ladder pattern meaning prayer.  In addition, the shells were also considered sacred and often fed to the chickens to ward off evil.

This inspiration and the work of Candelario had me working with eggs, clay and designs.  Some eggs incorporate a more traditional Ukrainian motif with ladder patterns and spring flowers.  Others are more contemporary leading me to the polka dot (circles) that I so feared and now am drawn to.  It seems to represent life and the cycles of human existence.  Enjoy!
